City of Cape Town

Client Needs:

Create international and domestic buzz around Cape Town and position it as the “events capital” of Africa.

Big Idea:

Through a broad range of media platforms, from print to TV, radio, online and hybrid media created an approach, which was worth millions of Rands in media value, was to highlight the city’s cultural value along with its ability to professionally manage significant events, further attracting visitors to the city that, already known for its landmark attractions. From 2010-2016, C.S.A. was retained by the City of Cape Town to not only create events, but also handle the publicity around some of these major happenings, including:

Festival of lights 2005-2016:

Massive stage, lights and excitement which ushered in the city’s festive season. C.S.A. handled all publicity around the event.

FIFA World Cup fan walk 2009:

Heralded as one of the World Cup’s most spectacular events, C.S.A. created  a 2.4km street of culture, music and excitement for fans who walked from the city to the stadium, and attracted and
hosted media from around the world.

FIFA World Cup host city launch 2010:

C.S.A. created a spectacular & significant stage event, including a performance by R. Kelly, which launched Cape Town as a World Cup Host City.

Nelson Mandela Legacy Event 2011:

During the FIFA™ World Cup 2010, CSA conceptualised and produced the “Nelson Mandela Canvas”, that stitched together the hand prints of well-known figures across sport, entertainment and society, into a large canvas, resembling the colours of the South African flag. Famous names who placed their hands in paint for Madiba included the late Nobel prize winners Bishop Desmond Tutu and FW De Klerk, actors Morgan Freeman and Djimon Hounsou, sports stars like Francois Pienaar and Chester Williams and other famous names including the Prince Albert of Monaco.

The following year, CSA produced a show at the Cape Town City Hill over Madiba’s birthday, attended by Djimon Hounsou and Kimora Lee Simmonds, which garnered significant international publicity impact. At the event, the canvas was revealed publicly for the first time and then auctioned, raising over R3M for the Nelson Mandela Foundation and then Mayor Patricia De Lille’s children’s charities.

Orange Championship Of Nations 2014:

C.S.A. handled all press & publicity for the City of Cape Town, all the while hosting one of Africa’s biggest soccer events.

World Design Capital 2014:

A DJ-inspired New Year’s Eve party ushering in the city as the World Design Capital.

Nelson Mandela Memorial 2014:

C.S.A. handled a week long memorial event on the passing of Former Pres. Nelson Mandela, including all international and local press accreditation and photo opportunities.
