This goes to show that our homegrown talent is finally receiving the recognition it deserves.
“There is a lot of new, exciting artists emerging and people are starting to take the South African hip hop scene seriously. It’s progressing and people are excited about it,” says South African rapper, Okmalumkoolkat.
Some of South Africa’s biggest names in hip hop, as well as young artists which have recently made waves in the industry, are set to perform at this year’s festival. The line-up includes AKA, It’s Yanga Chief, Cassper Nyovest, Nasty C, Major League DJ’z, Riky Rick, Okmalumkoolkat, Anatii, Kwesta DaKar and Emtee. This year the festival will also include a youth talent development programme which aims to discoverer aspiring artists looking to break into the industry. Industry leaders will host a series of workshops focused on empowering these young musicians, teaching them the skills that could turn them into South Africa’s next hip hop sensations. A few of these aspiring musicians will also have the opportunity to share the stage with the country’s top performers.
An astonishing 25, 000 people is expected to attend the massive music spectacle and we can’t wait to see what the hip hop elite will bring to the stage this year.
Who are we looking forward to most? Newcomer, Emtee, who recently received a SAMA award for Best Rap Album 2016, the queen of African rap, Nadia Nakai and of course Cassper and the rest of the established elite.
