Moonchild Sanelly is an artist who has playfully teased and titillated her South African audience at a steady pace, all the while honing a distinct sound, narrative and visual impact. Having been on our radar, radio and dropping in on local live Art music performances, we have gotten to know the quirky, sexy and intelligent mind behind the creative expression of Moonchild Sanelly. Her new EP Nüdes on Transgressive Records, is set to position her as one of the year’s greatest breakout artists and propel her into international stardom. Moonchild arrives as the complete package with track after banging track.
Moonchild’s creative energy is infectious and her presence is idiosyncratic all over the EP. Thunda Thighs is all Moonchild body positivity and her tongue in cheek, Rubenesque celebration of the female form.
“It’s a fun loving, educational party of sexual expressiveness. I want to have every woman knowing that every bit of their existence is worthy of being loved and valued. Knowing that you are that bitch. Owning it and saying it unapologetically, “said Sanelly. It comes with a TIK TOK challenge. Where De Dee Kat and Bashiri, meanwhile, are peppered with Sanelly’s sense of humor and dance-satire.
Moonchild says about the EP: ”The whole EP is about liberation. I have a range of fun, experimental sounds mixed with day-to-day (or night to night!) concepts and stories associated with my mission of liberation.”
There are also deeper, nuanced moments to Nüdes. Newtown Chips is a celebration of sharing the best parts of our curves and corners with someone we trust, and exploring how this can turn into a nightmare – if the person you trusted chooses to exploit it, a phenomenon of contemporary social media burn culture.
That the world is eager to have more of Moonchild Sanelly is no surprise and her talent has been immediately recognized in artful collaborations with the likes of Beyoncé, Die Antwoord, Diplo and Wizkid. The latest is a feature, With Love to an Ex, on Strange Timez, the upcoming album from British virtual band, Gorillaz.
“Moonchild is a global superstar waiting to happen” says Gorillaz’ Damon Albarn. But we knew that already.
