On Sunday night the Hollywood Foreign Press Association doled out awards for excellence in television and film. While the stories told on the big and small screens are the reason for the awards existence, the events surrounding the show are what peak our interests and keep us coming back year after year.
This year didn’t disappoint, with the 2018 edition of the Globes marked by a number of firsts. Oprah Winfrey became the first black women to receive the Cecil B. DeMille award for lifetime achievement. Oprah took the stage and delivered one of he more iconic speeches of our time reiterating, once again, that the tide is shifting in Hollywood and indeed around the world – “For too long women have not been heard or believed if they dared to speak their truth to the power of those men,” she said. “But their time is up”, she said.
Sterling K Brown of the television series “This Is Us” became the first black man to win the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a TV drama, while Aziz Ansari became the first Asian-American actor to win a Golden Globe for best actor in a TV comedy for “Master of None.” One of the bigger winners on the night was the drama “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”, which in addition to lead actress and supporting actor wins for its stars Fraces McDormand and Sam Rockwell, the film scooped up awards for Best Drama and Best Screenplay – a feat that bodes well for the film’s prospects come Oscar time.
As with all award shows we can’t speak about the ceremony without mentioning the fashion and while many celebrities opted for black in support of the “Times Up” movement, this only added to the significance of the night’s proceedings. Take a look at our favourites outfits from Sunday night’s event.
