Kenyan internet sensation and comedian, Elsa Majimbo, is the recipient of this year’s E! People’s Choice Award in the African Social Star category.

Known for her satirical monologues – which usually feature her crunching potato crisps, leaning back to a pillow and using a tiny 1990s sunglasses as a prop – 2020 proved a breakout year for Majimbo, with her videos going viral during lockdown.

The 18 year-old shows an adept handling of satire and sense of humor with one of her videos, for instance, indicating that Covid-19 was the perfect reason for her to avoid seeing people. It has already garnered over 200 000 views.

Majimbo faced stiff competition in the category with the likes of the likes of reigning Miss Universe Zozibini Tunzi, Emmy nominated South African actress Thuso Mbedu and South African rapper and BET award winner Sho Madjozi.

Big Brands have swiftly recognized the star power of the young Nairobi-born comedian. She recently collaborated with Rhianna’s label FENTY, MAC Cosmetics and South Africa’s Chicken Licken in an advertisement celebrating creative talent.

Her fans include Lupita Nyong’o, Joan Smalls, Zozibini Tunzi and Casper Nyovest.
